MATCH REPORTS

Moorlands Railway 1 Wagon and Horses 1

Sunday 25th OctoberBassingham 0 Moorlands Railway 4

Division One

Lincoln Moorlands Railway was looking to get back into winning ways after two successful draws.

The home team kicked off the match at Newark Road, kicking from left to right on a bright sunny Sunday morning.

The Railway lads started brightly and should have been ahead after only 3 minutes. A good move down the right by Kieron O’Boyle who beat his marker and then beat the defender before putting the ball at the feet of Craig Leverett, who with only the keeper to beat, placed into his arms.

This was the passage of play in the early parts of the game, the home team pressing the Wagon lads with them not being able to get out of their half, but the home team could not manage to finish, with several great chances to take the lead.

In the 15th minute the away team did manage to get out of their half and the striker managed to beat the defender before placing the ball into the back of the net.

The home team were now more determined to score a goal and again creating a lot of chances, with Kieron O’Boyle being influential on the right, but with missed chances from Sam Baily, Craig Leverett and Steve Tapp all being guilty of missing easy chances, they could not manage to score.

In the 43rd minute they did manage to get the goal the play deserved. A corner from the right by Sam Baily was half cleared before being put back into the box, which was met by Sam Coulson, who smashed the ball into the net.

The second half was much the same as the first half, the home team were creating a lot of chances, but with poor finishing and some good saves from the Wagon keeper kept the score at 1.1.

All in all, another poor performance and poor finishing has again let the Railway lads down. Next week they travel to Wagon and Horses in the third round of the county cup.

Sunday 27th September 2009

Division One

On a sunny Sunday morning, saw Lincoln Moorlands Railways travel to Bassingham, looking to continue their excellent start to the season and bring another three points back to Newark Road.

The first half kicked off with the Railway lads kicking from right to left with the sun behind them, and it was them that stared brightly with some good play in the Bassingham half and the home team could not get the ball, so it was no surprise when in the 15th minute the Railway lads opened the scoring.

A good move down the left involving Sam Coulson and Craig Leverett, led to the home team conceding a free kick about 25 yards out on the corner of the box. Sam Bailey put a beautiful ball into the box which the home keeper came out to collect, but it was just too high for him and he could only just get finger tips on it and the ball fell to the returning Mark (Trigger) Hodgson. It must be noted that this was Triggers first appearance since January when Moorlands Railway played Bassingham at Bassingham, in a game in which he scored, but was also injured and missed the rest of the season.

This goal was the just rewards that the away team deserved and after 30 minutes got there second. A good move down the right involving Danny Foxon, Darren Symonds led the ball being played to Kieron O’Boyle, who beat three players before playing the ball across the six yards box onto the on rushing Sam Coulson to slot the ball into the empty net.

At this point the home team could just not get out of their half, and it was a case of how many were the visitors going to score, and just before half time it was three.

A great ball from defender Paul Hodds, picked out Craig Leverett who beat the defender and then rounded the goalkeeper to make it 0-3 at half time.

At this point the game looked as if it was over as the home team had created very little and if anything was created it was easily dealt with by the Railway defence.

The second half started different to how the first half had finished, the home team were pressing to get back into the game, but again the Railway defence marshalled by Paul Hodds meant that Richard Kemp in the away goal had nothing to do.

In the 56th minute the game was all but over. Another great run by Kieron O’Boyle down the left beating two players, picked out Sam Coulson on the edge of the box to slam the ball into the net to leave the home goalkeeper with no chance.

In the final few minutes the home team could have scored some goals but poor finishing and a great save by Richard Kemp meant that the Railway lads had kept another clean sheet this season.

All in all a good performance in the first half and should have been better in the second. At three nil the game was over but with the missed chances, it should have been more. At the end of the day a 4.0 score line away from home is an excellent results and sets the Moorlands Railway lads up nicely for next week’s County Cup game at Gainsborough.

Wednesday 16th September 2009

Moorlands Railway entertained Division one opponents South Clifton at Newark Road which was the first game in the league for the home side.

After the previous week’s cup game, the Railway lads had six players away for one reason or the other, and it was left to the other members of the squad to get the season started.

The home team started brightly and within two minutes had taken the lead.

A good pass and move at high tempo lead to the ball being played into Kieron O’Boyle, who beat one player before rifling the ball pass the South Clifton keeper from about 20 yards.

The home team were then trying to increase the early advantage given to them with the away team not being able to get out of their half, but after 20 minutes they had and scored.

A good move down the right led the ball being played out for a corner, with the box full the corner was played in and the 'Railway men' managed to clear to about 30 yards out to the corner of the box, which fell to a South Clifton player. The player controlled the ball and looked to be putting a cross back into the box, but somehow managed to loop the ball over everyone and the home keeper, Darren Symonds into the corner of the net.

This lead to the away team getting their tails up and trying to move the ball quicker and take the advantage and after 25 minutes they should have taken the lead. The away team’s striker had managed to evade the Railway men’s defence and with only the goal keeper to beat, placed the ball into the near side post but it was in reach of the home goalkeeper and he managed to make a good save and push it around the corner.

In the 32nd minute the home team managed to score there second of the game. A good move down the right by Liam Slingsby and Kieron O’Boyle, who played the ball into the feet of Glen Merryweather, who managed to control the ball before being taken down by the away defender. Up stepped Paul Hodds to place the penalty in the bottom corner with the goal keeper going the other way.

In the second half the Railway men were looking to increase the play with some good play and after 55 minutes they got there 3rd of the match. A good move down the centre of the pitch involving Sam Coulson and Danny Foxon, lead to the ball being played into Kieron O’Boyle, who beat two players and again from about 20 yards smashed the ball into the goal.

At this point, the home team should have closed the game off by doing the simple things like keeping the ball, but instead went on looking to further increase the lead, but they started to lack discipline and this brought the visitors back into the game.

After 73 minutes they got the goal that brought them back into the match. A long ball to the far post was headed clear by the home defence, but only to the edge of the box, to the oncoming striker, who put the ball into the back of the net.

South Clifton were now pushing forward looking to put pressure on the home defence, with some good play and nearly got the rewards that they were look for. In the 78th minute a good move down the centre by the away team lead the ball being played behind the home defence into the box and with the on running striker looking at only beating the Railway goalkeeper, but a great challenge by Craig Tomlinson managed to push the ball away from the goal to keep the score at 3-2.

In the 87th minute with away team still pushing for the equaliser, the Railway lads managed to get the ball down the other half of the pitch, which lead the ball being played through to Rob Burley, but with only the goalkeeper to beat, the South Clifton keeper managed to save the ball and push it out, but only to the edge of the box and with some good play lead the ball being played again to Rob Burley who this time scored.

Now with only 2 minutes left, the home team should have played the ball into the corner, but again did not keep hold of the ball, which lead to the away team scoring their 3rd of the game.

All in all, the result was good against a very good team, but they are going to have to increase temp levels and also raise their self belief, but also do the simple things when needed.

Sunday 6th September 2009

Lincs County Cup Prelim round

On a sunny morning at Newark Road, saw Moorlands Railway open the new season with a cup game against Grimsby based Tap and Spile.

After the previous seasons campaign of finishing second in the table and gaining promotion to Division one, expectation was high in the camp for a good season, with all of the squad from the previous season signing and the addition of three extra players to add to the squad.

The home team started the game attacking from right to left and made the early exchanges with the Grimsby team not being able to get out of their own half. Despite the early pressure the Railway lads could not find the killer touch to gain the advantage.

The Grimsby team then came into the game and should have scored, a good move down the left lead the ball being played to the away teams striker, who with only the goal keeper to meet, was met by the home defender Craig Tomlinson for a great challenge to divert the ball out for a corner.

This was the passage of play for opening period of the game, the home team could not score and the Grimsby team could not find a way past the home defence.

The second half started off the same as the first had begun, the Railway lads having a lot of play but no killer instinct in front of goal.

In the 88th minute the Grimsby based team had what should have been an equaliser. A good move down the middle lead the ball being played out to the striker on the left and with only the goalkeeper to beat placed the ball into the bottom corner, but somehow Richard Kemp in the home goal managed to get down and make a great save to keep the score at 1.0.

All in all, the result was good but the performance was poor as well as the finishing. If the Railway lads are going to compete for honours this season they are all going to have to raise their game.

Sunday 5th April 2009

In a game of the top two in division 2, with Hykeham already being crowned champions via the previous weeks results and Moorlands Railway looking to get three points which would mean that they would be promoted and depending on other results finish second in the league, and also finish the season with not losing a home league game at Newark Road.

The Railway lads kicked off attaching from left to right, on a sunny morning at Newark Road, and after only five minutes took the lead.  A long pass from the back evaded the Hykeham defence which was picked up by the recalled Craig Leverett, who took the ball around the away goalkeeper and passed the ball into the empty net.

This was the passage of play for the opening periods, Moorlands Railway creating a lot of chances but not finishing them off.

In the 25th minute, Hykeham should have scored with their first attempt on goal.  A corner on the right was met by the Hykeham player who hit the cross bar and rebounded out, the ball was half clear by the home defence to the on-coming Hykeham player whose shot on target was brilliantly saved and turned round the post by Richard Kemp in the home goal.

In the 44th minute the home team managed to score their second goal of the game.  A good moving down the middle involving Daniel Foxon and Sam Coulson lead the ball being played to James Hulse, who then played the ball out to the right to Kieron O’Boyle, who played a great ball into the box at which James Hulse got a faint touch on the ball but the Hykeham defender who was five yards behind him deflected the ball into the net.

In the 55th minute Hykeham had scored and were back in the game.  A good free kick from about 25 yards on the left placed the ball into the net, leaving Richard Kemp standing still.

Half time came and went, with the visitors looking to try and get back into the game, but after 65 minutes, the score was 3.1.  A good run down the right by Kieron O’Boyle lead to a good cross into the box, this was cleared but fell to James Hulse, who saw that the Hykeham keeper had come out to get to the cross was off his line, and James Hulse from 30 yards placed the ball into the net.

Five minutes later Hykeham had scored and were again back in the game.  The Hykeham player on the left wing picked the ball up from about 25 yards from the Railway goal, who beat five players before putting the ball, passed Richard Kemp.

In the 78th minute, the points were sealed, a good run down the left first by Luke Evans and then by Sam Baily, lead the ball being played into the box.  It was picked up by Craig Leverett, who got the bounce and some look, before placing the ball into the net.

The closing stages of the game, Hykeham did not get a chance; a well marshalled defence including Craig Tomlinson, Phil Evans and Luke Evans meant that the points were staying with the Railway lads.

All in all, a fantastic result and performance against, the division 2 champions.  With this result it meant that the only team to beat the Railway lads at home all season were the Premier division champions, so all season in the league undefeated.  With the three points it leaves on Wragby who can catch them in the league.  They have three games in hand but are nine points and five goals to the better, so all in all after finishing 5th last season to finish second is a fantastic achievement and all of the credit must go down to the players that have put in at least 100% in every game to get to this situation.  Here comes Division one next season.

BRANSTON 2 LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 6

Sunday 22nd March 2009

After the previous weeks great 2-2 draw at Wragby, in which the Railway lads put in their best performance of the season, this was a game in which Moorlands Railway were playing bottom of the league Branston, in which could potentially been a banana skin game.

After the results from the previous week, in which the Railway lads dropped to second in the table behind Hykeham, Moorlands Railway were looking to gain a valuable three points in their quest for league honours this season.

Moorlands Railway kicked off from right to left on a windy pitch, which was always going to make conditions hard, but after 15 minutes the away team scored the opening goal.  A good run and play down the right by Luke Evans and Darren Symonds, lead to a good cross being played into the box which was meet by James Hulse, but his header hit the Branston defender and went loose, and of which no one could make a good contact on the ball, but that was until Marat Mugginov came in and placed the ball in the bottom corner of the net, for his first goal of the season

On seventeen minutes the Railway lads doubled their score.  A good interlink play by Daniel Foxon and Sean Frecklington, lead the ball being played into James Hulse in the box, who was upended by the home defender, and a penalty was awarded, and James Hulse stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way.

In the twenty third minute the home team managed there first shot on target.  The Railway defence tried to play to ball out but were swamped with on coming Branston players, of which took the ball of them, and placed the ball into the bottom of the net to not give Richard Kemp a chance.

On twenty eight minutes, Kieron O’Boyle scored his first goal of the year, his last coming on 28th December.  A good run on the right by Luke Evans lead to a good ball being played into the box, which was meet by Kieron O’Boyle who finished in style, to give the home keeper no chance.

In the thirtieth fifth minute the Railway lads scored their fourth of the match. The home goalkeeper played to ball out to the home defender, who was closed down by Sam Baily, who took the ball of him, played the ball into Kieron O’Boyle, who let the ball run across him, for leading scorer, James Hulse to walk the ball into an empty net for his 18th of the season and 16th in the league.

In the fifty second minute the home team managed their second shot on target.  Again the Railway lads were trying to play the ball out the box, when a long pass across the pitch was picked up by the home attacker, who took the ball into the box and placed in the net.

In the eighty fifth minute the Railway lads managed to wake up.  A good corner on the right by Sean Frecklington was meet by the one coming player, Daniel Foxon, who played the ball back out the Sean Frecklington, who with the home defence trying to get out, played the ball into the box, which was meet at the far post but the stretching Craig Leveret for his first goal of the season.

In the eighty seventh minute, a good move down the left involving Craig Tomlinson and Sam Bailey, lead to a great cross into the box and with the home keeper stranded and only a touch on the ball would have scored, the ball fell to Luke Evans who from on the goal line, managed to hit his shot onto the cross bar and go out, and that must be the miss of the season, ever!!

In the eighty eighth minute the Railway lads scored their sixth of the game.  Another corner on the right by Sean Frecklington lead the ball being played across the box on to the oncoming Craig Tomlinson, whose shot beat the goalkeeper.

In the end the score, once again should have been double figures, but with Wragby getting beat by St Helens, the Moorlands Railway fait is in their own hands, with only one game left, against league leaders Hykeham on Sunday 5th April at Newark Road, if they win they will go up, which would in the end be a fantastic end to the season.

NEWPORT RANGERS 0 LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 1

Sunday 8th March 2009

Division Two

On a cold and raining morning at Sudbrooke Drive, Moorlands Railway were looking to maintain there lead at the top of Division Two, with only four games left to play.

The reverse fixture saw the Railway lads score seven with Newport Rangers unable to reply.

The Railway lads had to make a change in defence with the outstanding defender Craig Tomlinson suffering a hamstring injury, but the usually dependent Luke Evans slotting in a centre half.

The Railway lads kicked off defending against the strong wind, that was always going to make football hard to play in, but it was them who had the first chance of the match.

On fifteen minutes good interlink play down the right by Kieron O’Boyle and Craig Leverett, lead the ball being played onto the edge of the box which was meet by Captain, Daniel Foxon, who’s shot on goal, was high and wide.

On thirty minutes the home team had their first attempt on goal.  A cross from the left lead to a mix up in the defence, which lead the ball falling to the home striker, who’s shot on goal was going in a the near post, but for an outstanding one hand save from Richard Kemp down to his left, he managed to push the ball around the post for a corner.

In the forty-second minute the Railway lads should have taken the lead.  A good run down the left by Sam Baily, lead the ball being played into leading scorer James Hulse, who one on one with the goalkeeper, could not manage to beat the goalkeeper and the home keeper made a good save.

The half time whistle went and the Railway lads had put in a good defence play, but were lacking some control with there passing and attacking play.  Some good hard words were spoken at half time and it appeared to work.  The Railway lads started to create chances and put the home team under some pressure, but in the sixty fifth minute the home team created a good chance from a corner, but were only stopped by the reflex right handed save from Richard Kemp to keep them out.

As the game went on the Railway lads went for the win, moving Luke Evans from defence into midfield, and it was him who helped open up the scoring.  With ten minutes remaining, Luke collected the ball on the half way line beat three players before playing the ball into the box to Kieron O’Boyle, who beat one defender before passing the ball to James Hulse, who on a good turn smashed the ball into the net to give the home goal keeper with no chance.

The Railway lads were looking to close out the game, with the impressive Phil Evans marshalling the defence into not letting the home side into creating a chance, but with the clock running down they did just that.

With only seconds to go, a long ball from the back evaded the Railway defence, and the Newport striker picked the ball up and with only Richard Kemp to beat, then from out of no where, and great sliding challenge from Darren Symonds, took the ball clean away from the striker, and the ball was cleared.

In the end, this turned out to be a great result, especially with second in the table Hykeham losing at home against Wragby, the closing few weeks are going to be interesting, but with Moorlands Railway still having to play Hykeham and forth placed Wragby, next weekend, the league can still be decided by them.

GEORGE AND DRAGON 0 LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 4

Sunday 1st March 2009

Division Two

In a game of two teams looking for points for very different reasons, saw the top team play the second to bottom team.

After the previous weeks disappointing draw against Wragby, Moorlands Railway were looking to get back into the goals against a team who looked like relegation was only a matter of time coming.

The Railway lads had several players missing for one reason or another from the previous week, but still had a strong team out, and in the early parts of the match this showed.

There play and passes were sloppy, trying to get used to playing with everyone new, but after ten minutes when the first goal went in, there play changed.

A good run on the left by James Hulse, lead to him being taken down near the goal line, just outside the box.  Captain Danny Foxon stepped up to take the free kick.  With his kick and the penalty box full of players, his cross evaded the home goalkeeper and picked out the on rushing James Hulse, who with a bullet header from two yards could not miss and placed his header in the net.

In the 14th minute the score was 2.0.  A good run down the left by Craig Leverett, lead to him gaining a corner, and again Danny Foxon stepped up.  This time his cross was going in, but the home goalkeeper helped in it.

By now the Railway lads were totally on top and if was a case of how many they were going to score.  In the 27th minute, good play by the midfield pair of Danny Foxon and Sean Frecklington lead the ball being playing to the impressive Luke Evans on the right, and with one defender to beat before he got to goal, with which he went round with ease, lead to him having a shot on goal from about 18 yards, but just like the previous week he could not make it count, and placed the ball into the arms of the home goalkeeper.

In the 35th minute, the game was over, as the Railway lads scored there third of the game.  Some good inter play by Luke Evans, Darren Symonds and Peter Tute, lead the ball being played to Sean Frecklington, who from 25 yards, beat his midfield marker and placed the ball into the bottom left hand corner, giving the home goalkeeper no chance.

The away team were not giving the home team a chance on goal, infact in 45 minutes the back line of the Craig Frecklington (old man), Phil Evans, Craig Tomlinson and Darren Symonds made sure that Richard Kemp in the Railway goal did not have a single shot on target.

In the second half, the play continued, with the away team having all of the play, creating chances and missing them.  In the 65th minute the Railway lads we given a penalty and up stepped James Hulse with the chance to take over as leading scorer for the club, and he did, sending the George goalkeeper the wrong way.

In the 66th the Railway lads made their final substitution of the game, giving the first appearance of the season to manager Mark Hodds, who slotted in a right back.  With him coming on and putting Craig Tomlinson up front, meant that the Railway lads back line total age was 150years young, not bad for team that were playing against younger players.

In the end the result should have been double figures, and Richard Kemp in the Railway goal, not having one single shot to save, he should have taken a newspaper to read, just to pass the morning away!!!

LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 2 WRAGBY 2

Sunday 22nd February 2009

Division Two

In a game from two teams looking for league honours this season, saw current leaders Moorlands Railway playing second in the table Wragby, in a game that the home team was looking to continue there unbeaten home record and increase there lead at the top of the table.

The game kicked of with the home team kicking from left to right.

The early parts of the game were evenly matched with both teams trying to boss the match, with the home team eventually gaining the upper hand with some good play from the midfield pair of Sam Coulson and Daniel Foxon.

In the 15th minute, the home team should have taken the lead.  A great corner from the right by Sam Baily lead the ball being missed by everyone with only a touch needed.

But it was the away team who took the lead after 23 minutes when there first attack of the game lead the ball being playing forward with the Wragby striker with plenty of time to pick his spot and leave Richard Kemp with no chance in the home goal.

This goal seemed to make the home team increase their play, and with in two minutes they again forced a corner on the right.  Again taken by Sam Baily but this time being met by the on coming Craig Tomlinson to place the ball past the Wragby goal keeper to make the score 1.1.

In the 30th minute the home team should have taken the lead.  A good run down the right by Luke Evans lead the ball being played to Kieron O’Boyle who played the ball to James Hulse, who only managed to shoot straight at the away goalkeeper.

In the 40th minute the home team did manage to gain their advantage that their play deserved.  Another good run down the right by Luke Evans lead the ball being played to Daniel Foxon, who played a great ball in the on running James Hulse, who was forced wide by the Wragby defender, but from an impossible angle, he managed to lob the goalkeeper and place the ball into the bottom far corner of the goal.

In the 45th minute the home team should have increased there lead and what would have probably have killed off the game.  A great move involving Kieron O’Boyle and James Hulse lead to the latter being wide on the right, managed to pick his head up and pick out the on running Luke Evans, and with a great cross picked him out with him being only ten yards from goal. But some how he managed to miss the goal, high by about ten yards.

In the 54th minute the away team managed to score the leveller.  A good run on the left lead the ball being played into the box and with the striker stood only five yards out and only Richard Kemp to beat, he game the goalkeeper no chance.

In the 70th minute two players, one from each side were sent off.

The rest of the match was uneventful, the home teams were pushing forward trying to gain the winner, but the away team looked to have settled for the point.

In the end, the home team should have won, but again poor finishing let them down.  The Railway lads are still top, but with only five games left this season, looks like they will have to push all the way in these games to gain maximum points, in there quest for league honours this season.

Wellingore 2 Lincoln Moorlands Railway 7

Sunday 15th February 2009

Division Two

On a cold morning in Wellingore, saw Moorlands Railway return to only there second league game of the year, and looking to get back to winning ways after two consecutive defeats, one in the cup and one in the league.

The Railway lads had new signing Craig Levett starting on the bench for the first time this season, and the away team were looking for what would be only there second away league victory of the season.

It was the home team who kicked off, kicking right to left, but it was the away team who started to put the pressure on the home goal.  In the second minute some good interplay down the right by Phil Evans and Luke Evans lead to a great cross being played across the box, but evading the on coming forwards.

The early passage of play was like this, good defensive play by the returning captain Paul Hodds and the impressive Craig Tomlinson, but poor final balls into the box kept the score at 0.0.

With this pressure beginning to mount, it was surly only time before the away team scored, and it did, in the 20th minute a good run down the right from Luke Evans, lead the ball being playing into the box and with a simple finish for the oncoming midfielder Sam Coulson to finish with the easiest of chances.

In the 25th minute, this lead was doubled when another great ball from the right, this time Kieron O’Boyle, lead to a goal mouth scramble for Daniel Foxon to score from close range.

At this point of the match is was how many were the away team going to score as they were in that much control, but it was the home team who scored in the 28th minute, to half the arrears and give them a chance, but only four minutes after the home team has scored, the Railway lads got there third.  A corner on the left from Sam Baily lead to the home keeper coming out to punch the ball away, but only diverted it into his own net.

This is how the first half ended, but by this time the game should have been over.   Poor final balls from everyone lead to them not finishing chances.

The second half started as the first half finished, lots of pressure from the away team, but poor final balls.  In the 50th minute the Railway lads got there fourth of the game, another great corner from the right lead to the ball being placed onto the head of Sam Coulson, who easily beat the home keeper with his second of the game.  In the 55th Minute, it was 1.5.  Keiron O’Boyle picked the ball up just inside the home half, who then beat four players before passing the ball to James Hulse, who beat the goal keeper with a good finish.

At this stage the Railway management team bought on all of their three subs, and it was the third of the three who scored the sixth of the game.  Another good run from Keiron O’Boyle who again beat four players before firing a shot goal bound, but the defender managed to get in front of the ball, but the rebound fell at the feet of Ben Gibbons, who beat one defender and then beat to goal keeper for his first goal of the season.

In the 65th minute, the home team managed to score their second goal of the game, a long ball over the top evaded the Railway defence, before neatly beating Richard Kemp.

In the 75th minute the Railway lads got there 7th of the game, and it was Sam Coulson who scored his 9th of the season and his third in this game.  A good move down the left from Sean Frecklington lead the ball being playing into Keiron O’Boyle, who beat one defender before playing the ball to Sam Coulson, who rounded the goalkeeper with ease to finish the scoring.

In the end, the score could and should have been in double figures, and the Railway lads will need to improve in the finishing department to maintain there challenge for honours this season.  With Hykeham not having a game this week, the Railway lads returned to the top, and with now second in the table Wragby the next visitors to Newark Road on Sunday 22nd, the league is hotting up with only six games to go.

LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 0 GE MILLERS 3

Sunday 1st February 2009

Ron Eaglen Cup Quarter-Final

After the previous weeks poor result in the league, it was a break from league action, which saw Moorlands Railway play current premier league leaders in the quarter finals of the Ron Eaglen Cup.

After the pitch had been made playable after the previous days game, which is a complement to the grounds staff, after a bad start to the week, weather wise.

The first half started with the Railway lads kicking off on a cold morning on Newark Road.  The early parts of the match were played in the middle of the field with the home team managing to hold there lofty opponents and more than hold there own.  The midfield three of Danny Foxon, Sam Coulson and Aaron Murphy playing strong football and catching there opponents out on more than one occasion as I am sure they thought they were in for an easy morning.

The first chance came in the 20th minute for the home team.  A good run down the right by Kieron O’Boyle lead to a great cross into the box, and with the Millers goalkeeper stranded the on rushing James Hulse was just a yard short and went out for a goal kick.

In the 35th minute the away team had their first chance of the game.  A good run on the left lead to the ball being played into the box where the on rushing forward handled the ball in the box and then scored.  The referee did not see the handball and awarded the goal.  This managed to push the home team into more attacking positions.  Good play down the left by Sam Baily lead another great cross into the box, but again, being a yard to far in front of the on coming Sam Coulson.

The half went out with a lot of play going down the middle of the park where the match was going to be won or lost for both teams, and with the home defence of Sean Frecklington, Phil Evans, Craig Tomlinson and Luke Evans, playing so well, the away team was struggling to manage to create any chances what so ever.

The second half start the same as the first had finished.  Most of the play being in the middle of the pitch with not many chances for both teams, infact on one on shot from both teams.

After 65 minutes the away team made two changes and swapped players around trying to get the second of the game to finish the match.  In the 80th minute the away team managed to get a corner, there second of the match, from the right, and a great cross, but an ever better header from the home defender, Craig Tomlinson, lead the ball being cleared to the corner of the box, where the on coming player shot first time and went past everyone into the bottom corner to give Richard Kemp in the home goal with no chance.

This goal lead to the home team making changes to try and get back into the match, by brining on the usually lethal super sub, Glen Merryweather.

In the 85th minute GE Millers scored there third of the match, another great strike from the edge of the box, beat Richard Kemp in the home goal.

In the end the home team had produced there performance of the season, so far, which should create a good feeling in the camp for the rest of the season

Sunady League Division Two

On a very wet and muddy pitch on the west common, it was always going to make the football impossible to play and hard to stand up.

After the previous weeks cup win, which see the Moorlands Railway play GE Millers, current Sunday Premier league holders, and currently top and undefeated this season in the league, it was back to basics for the current leaders of Division two.

The Railway lads had to make several changes from the previous weeks game due to injury, with Mark Hodgson being a long term lay off due to him pulling his knee ligaments, but the players coming in were more than capable of holding there own.

The game started slow for both teams with neither creating any chances due to the conditions.  In the 25th minute the home team took the lead with there first shot on target.  A cross from the left lead the ball being played into the area where the Railway lads missed the header and the ball falling to the Hartsholme forward, who dually placed the ball between Richard Kemps legs and into the back of the net.

This appeared to spur the away team into life.  They created a lot of chances, but as the same in previous weeks, very poor finishing all over the pitch by Sam Coulson, Danny Foxon, Kieron O’Boyle, James Hulse and Sam Baily meant that the half finished 1.0.

In the second half the Railway lads came out trying to get back into the game, but they could not get started, they looked as if they were playing in first gear, and everyone was the same.

In the 55th minute the home team doubled there lead, some poor defending lead the ball falling to the Hartsholme player, who again, beat Richard Kemp, who had no chance with the goal.  In the 65th minute it was 3.0.  The Railway lads had made a good move down the right via Luke Evans, who played the ball into Kieron O’Boyle, who tried to beat the home defender, he then lost the ball and the ball was kicked forward to the Hartsholme striker.  He picked the ball up, and after getting passed the challenge from Darren Symonds, dually played the ball across the area, to the on coming player, who scored.

In the 75th minute, the Railway lads looked as if they had got a lifeline in the game, when a poor challenge from the home defender, lead to a penalty being given.  James Hulse stepped up with the ball and scored.

Instead of inspiring the away team to get back into the game, they let in another.  On the 80th minute, a long ball over the top beating all of the defenders, with the striker only left with beating the goalkeeper, which he did.

In the 84th minute, the home team scored there fifth of the game, to make the score worse for the Railway lads.

In the end the Railway lads got what they deserved from their worst performance of the season, no heart, no passion, no pride, and had Craig Tomlinson and Phil Evans not been playing, the score could have been even worse.  They had only them selves to blame and cannot blame the poor conditions or the referee and need to take a good long look in the mirror, else these score lines will continue.

Following this game, the Moorlands Railway lads are still top, but now the second placed team have three games in hand and are now only one points ahead.  If they are going to compete for league honours this season they are going to have to improve in the way they play all over the pitch, and realize that they have to go out and compete with teams and not expect to win just because they are top of the league and with no league game next weekend, they could not be top for long.  They have also got to realize that when they play away from home they need to improve, else the early season promise will fade quickly.

BASSINGHAM 4  LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 6 (aet)

Ron Eaglen Cup Round two

Sunday 11th January 2009

On a cold and windy morning in Bassingham, saw Division One side play current Division two side Moorlands Railways play for a place in the quarterfinals.

This was a re-run of the completion from last season, which saw Bassingham progress 2.1 into the second round.

The first half started with the Railway lads attaching with the wind behind them and within the 3rd minute should have taken the lead.  A good move down the right lead the ball being playing into Kieron O’Boyle who shot was straight at the home keeper.  This was the passage of play for the first part of the game, the home team could not get out of there half but the Railway lads poor finishing meant that the score stayed at 0.0.  In the tenth minute the home team did manage to get out of there half.  A long kick from the centre half lead to confusion in the home defence with Craig Tomlinson and Mark Hodgson leaving the striker with a chance on goal, which he took well giving Richard Kemp in the away goal with no chance.

In the fifteenth minute the Moorlands Railway lads should have scored.  A good move down the left, lead the ball being played to Sam Baily who played a great ball into the box and from two yards, captain Daniel Foxon with an open goal and anything on target would have scored, some how managed to kick the ball the wrong way and clear the ball from goal and what must be the miss of the season.

The pressure was still on from the away side, looking to get them selves back into the game, but missed chances from Aaron Murphy, Luke Evans, Kieron O’Boyle and Sam Coulson kept the score at 1.0.

In the thirty fifth minute the Railways lads managed to move up a gear and increased the pressure on the home sides goal.  In the fortieth minute the Railway lads did manage to make the pressure count.  Another great ball from Sam Baily on the left who put his cross into the box and beat the goalkeeper onto the head of Sam Coulson, who could not miss from two yards.

The game at half time should have been finished as a contest, the home team managed to have one shot on target which went in and the Railway lads had ten, but could only score once.

The second half started the same as the first had finished, with the away team having all of the play and make the league difference look nonsense and the wrong way round.

In the fifty fifth minute Moorlands Railway managed to score there second of the game.  A corner on the left lead to a mix up in the box and it fell to Mark Hodgson, who turned and stuck the ball into the net.  Not bad for a defender and I am sure that any striker would have been pleased with the finish.

The passage of play continued, lots of chances but poor finishing from the away team, which meant that the home were still in the contest.

On the seventy fifth minute the home team got a free kick on the right.  Their centre half placed the ball and placed the ball into the far top had corner of the goal, which gave Richard Kemp with no chance.

On the 85th minute, things went from bad to worse for the Railway lads, the home team managed their third shot on goal, which was scored.

This lead to a change in formation and a change in the team.  The management team of Moorlands Railway bought Glen Merryweather on and played three up front, trying to salvage something from the game.  Time was running out for the away team, with thirty seconds on the clock left, and pass from the back missed everyone and ran through to the home goalkeeper, who missed his kick, but Glen Merryweather was chasing the ball down and he managed to get to the ball before the keeper did, but was then brought down by the goalkeeper and a penalty was award.  With the usual taker, Paul Hodds missing due to illness, it was left to James Hulse with the pressure of the last kick of the game to take to extra time, which he dually did, sending the keeper the wrong way, and the game went into extra time.

Two minute from the kick off in extra time, the Railway lads managed to score there forth goal of the game.  James Hulse again, scoring,

In the fifth of extra time, the home team should have been reduced to ten men.  Luke Evans picked the ball up on the half way line, who beat one player, who then got past the centre half.  He was about 20 yards away from goal when he was brought down by the last man, but instead of a red card that should have been shown, yellow was shown instead.  From the free kick, Sean Frecklington placed the ball and bent it around the way and into the far corner of the net to make the score 3.5.

In the tenth minute of extra time, the home team got another free kick on the edge of the area, which beat the ball but was straight at Richard Kemp in the away goal, but some how he managed to let the ball go through him to make the score 4.5.

At half time the away team made there final substation to see out the game, bringing on Darren Holmes and playing five in midfield and one up front.  This was to snuff out any danger the home team tried to have.  This lead to the Railway lads scoring there sixth of the game to make sure it was safe.  Sam Coulson scored this for his second of the match.

In the end it was the correct score, but again, the story of the season, the Moorlands Railway lads creating a lot of chances but not making them count and finishing off teams early, but in the end a quarter final place was up for stake and that is what was gained.

In the 40th minute, the opening goal came. A good run down the left by Sam Baily and some good interlink play involving Kieron O’Boyle and Sam Coulson led the ball being played Kieron O’Boyle, who from about 30 yards on the left hand side of the box smacked the ball into the top left hand corner of the goal to give the away teams goalkeeper no chance.LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 4 HYKEHAM 2

LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 7 NEWPORT RANGERS 0
Sunday 28th December 2008

On a cold Sunday morning on Newark Road, Lincoln Moorlands Railway were looking to maintain there four point lead at the top of division two going into the new year against a very good team in Newport Rangers.
After a delayed start it was the home team that put the pressure on the visitors and within the first minute should have taken the lead when a great cross from Sean Frecklington on the left went straight across the six yard box and only needed a touch but the Railway men were too slow in attacking the ball.
This was the passage of play in the early stages, chance after chance after chance, but no finish. Then in the tenth minute, the home team got there rewards when the ball was passed out to Luke Evans who beat his man to put a great cross into the box and after a mix up by the home defence the ball fell to new signing Aaron Murphy who with a great turn smashed the ball into the back of the net.
In the fifteenth minute the Railway lads doubled there advantage when the ball was passed to leading scorer, Kieron O’Boyle who beat his marker and then went round the keeper to score.
In the twenty fifth minute, the home team scored there third of the match. Another great ball from Luke Evans on the right, lead to the Newport defender placing the ball in to the roof of his own net.
At this stage the game looked over, the home team should have scored ten and the Newport lads could not get out of there half, only a mix up in the home teams defence gave the Newport lads half a chance which was hit straight at Richard Kemp in the home goal.
Half time came and went and the home team made their substitutions taking off Captain Paul Hodds and Luke Evans and replacing them with Ben Gibbons and Darren Symonds.
In the fifty fifth minute the home team scored again. Sean Frecklington picked the ball up on edge of his own box, beat five players played a one two with Sam Coulson before placing the ball passed the away goalkeeper.
In the sixty third minute, number five went in. Ben Gibbons won the ball on the half way line, played a one two with Daniel Foxon who clipped the ball over the away defence, Gibbons raced into the area before picking out Sam Coulson on the edge of the box who with a great curling shot placed the ball into the bottom right hand corner.
In the 70th Minute number six was scored, and a great move including, Sam Coulson, Daniel Foxon, Sean Frecklington lead to the ball being played to Kieron O’Boyle to again beat the keeper to score his second of the game.
In the 78th minute, number seven was scored, and it was Sean Frecklington who scored his second of the game.
In the end the score could and should have been in double figures, and the Railway lads will need to improve in the finishing department to maintain there challenge for honours but with Second placed Plough losing, the Moorlands Railway lads go into the new year with a seven point lead a the top of the table.

Ron Eaglen Cup First Round
Sunday 21st December 2008

After the previous weeks poor result in the league, it was a break from league action, which saw Moorlands Railway play South Clifton from the league above in the first round of the Ron Eaglen Cup, which was previously postponed due to a boggy pitch.
It was the home team who came flying out of the box and on the tenth minute gain a penalty. A good run on the left from Sam Baily led the ball being placed into Sean Frecklington who on his right foot brought the ball in side onto his left and was dually brought down in the box and the referee did not hesitate in giving the penalty. Up stepped the captain Paul Hodds to take responsibility of the penalty, but to his amazement and everyone in the ground, that the penalty was placed to the right hand of the keeper and he made a great save to keep the score at 0-0.
This was the passage of play for the entire first half. The Railway lads had all of the play but no finish product. In the 35th minute, a great run on the left hand side by Sean Frecklington lead to the ball being placed into the box and was met by a fantastic header by Daniel Foxon who with the keeper stood on the spot and with no chance of saving it, hit the post and the ball rebounded to safety.
In the second half again, the home team were in total control of the game, even though not playing the best, they totally dominated it, and within ten minutes of the start of the second half they dually got there rewards. A great run from the improved Sam Coulson, beat four players before placing the ball into the far corner of the goal.
In the 70th minute, the Railway lads got there second of the game. Sean Frecklington picked the ball up about 30 yards out from goal, and with a great left foot placed the ball in the top right hand corner leaving the South Clifton keeper with no chance what so ever.
In the 89th minute the home team made there final substitution of the game, bringing on the ageing Craig Frecklington for his son Sean, and it was his pass that set up the third goal of the game. Craig was rolling back the years with a pin point pass in to the feet of Luke Evans who beat the defender to the ball before placing the ball under the keeper to finish the game off and make it look like a fair result on the passage of the play. It must be noted that if the South Clifton team had had a different goalkeeper in, it could have been double figures but he was in excellent form.
All in all, a very good result and a better performance by the home team who now play Bassingham away, also from league one, on Sunday 11th January in the next round.

PLOUGH 4 LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 0
Sunday 7th December 2008

On a freezing cold morning on Birchwood Avenue, with the pitch mainly frozen over but after an early pitch inspection the referee wanted to play the game.
Due to the pitch conditions it was always going to make the football impossible to play.
After a poor performance in the previous game, the Railway lads were looking to put in a much-improved performance, against a team currently playing well.
In the fourth minute it was the home side that went into the lead. A long clearance up the pitch lead to the Plough forward managing a strike on goal, this lead to the Railway goalkeeper Richard Kemp slipping on the icy pitch and just managing to save the goal ward ball, but he could not manage to hold on to it and slipped away from him, and what seemed like a life time, he managed to get up and slip over again, when the plough striker came in to tap the ball into an open net from three yards.

From this moment to half time, it was all the away team, but with no final ball or every shot going yards wide, they were unable to put the home team goalkeeper under any sort of pressure. The only real chance that was on goal was from what looked like a very dodgy offside, when the Rail player, Kieron O’Boyle look yards on side.

In the second half, it was much the same, the away team having lots of play but no final ball. In the 60th minute the home team managed to score their second of the game. Another long ball was picked up on the left hand side who managed to slot the ball into the bottom corner. This goal managed to put the head down on the away team and they appeared to have given up.

In the 68th minute another slip on the icy pitch by the Railway goal keeper lead to the home team scoring there third goal of the game, and then in the 80th minute to make matters worse, Plough scored there fourth to make the score line finish 4-0 and very flattering for the home team.

Following this game, the Moorlands Railway lads are still top, but now the second placed team have three games in had and are only four points ahead. If they are going to compete for league honours this season they are going to have to improve in the way they play all over the pitch, and realize that they have to go out and compete with teams and not expect to win just because they are top of the league. Lets hope next weeks cup game at home to division one side North Scarle is much improved, else it could be another defeat.

LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 4 MANOR UNITED 2
Sunday 30th November 2008

In a game of two teams looking for points for very different reasons, saw the top team play the bottom team, in which the home team could move four points clear at the top of the table.
On a wet and boggy pitch on Newark Road, it was the away team who started the game brightly and looked like upsetting the odds, as with inside 10 minutes they had taken an early lead. A strong run from the half way line by the Manor forward led to a shot into the far post which game Richard Kemp in the Rails goal no chance.
This led to the away team playing some good football, and pressing the home team all over the pitch. On the 23rd Minute the home team did manage to find some space and some good movement to create a good opening that led to their first goal. A good move involving Captain Danny Foxon and Sam Coulson, created some space to free the ball into the box for a shot by leading goal scorer Kieron O’Boyle, this produced an excellent save by the Manor goal keeper, but the ball fell to James Hulse to rifle the ball in on the turn into the net.
The goal did not improve the home teams play and it was still the away team who looked more likely in scoring the next goal, but some excellent defending by Craig Tomlinson meant that the away team had lots of play but nothing on goal.
In the 35th minute Moorlands Railway managed to create another chance on goal. A great run on the right from Luke Evans and a pass to the goal scorer James Hulse, he managed to beat the goalkeeper but his effort went just past the post. But only two minutes later, the home team did manage to score their second goal of the match. A sweeping move down the left led the ball being passed onto Kieron O’Boyle at the edge of the penalty box, who beat two players, then rounded the goal keeper before placing the ball into the top of the net.
In the second half the home team tried to increase the tempo of the game, but they could just not get started, every time they got the ball they tried to hard to make a match winning pass or they just gave the ball away. In the 60th minute the home team made a substitution to try and bring some life into them, but within two minutes it was the away team that had scored there second of the game. A corner from the left lead to a call from the substitute Darren Holmes, missing the ball and the Manor player placing his firm header into the net.
This now sparked the home team into picking them selves up. In the 70th minute a strong run from the half way line by Sean Frecklington, who beat three players before eventually being brought down 7 yards in the box, but to everyone’s amazement including the away team the referee gave a free kick on the edge of the box. The free kick was taken by James Hulse, who smashed the ball into the wall and deflected into the middle of the pitch, witch lead to a shot from the edge of the box by Daniel Foxon, the shot hit a Manor player and spooned into the air towards the goal, where Mark Hodgson was there with no defenders around him but was on side, with the easiest header to regain the lead for the Railway lads.
On the 80th minute the Railway management team made there final throw of the game and bought on Glen Merryweather up front.
On 85 minutes another great run from the left by Sean Frecklington, put an excellent cross into the box and there he was again, super sub Glen Merryweather to score again for the third game on the trot when coming on a sub. That is three goals in 27 minutes as coming on as sub, and must be by now knocking on the door for a starting place!!!
In the end it was a hard game but three excellent points earned in the race for league honours this season. The Railways lads are now four points clear at the top, but the Railway lads will have to improve in there next game, when they travel to third in the table Plough.

LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 3 HORNCASTLE 2
Ron Eaglen Cup Preliminary round
Sunday 23rd November

In a game involving two teams looking for league honours this season, the cup may have proved an unwanted distraction, especially given the artic conditions. The kick off was delayed by 25 minutes due to the snow delaying the visitors arrival time at Newark Road.
On a snow covered pitch, making it impossible for either side to play quality football, although both sides tried their best, it was the visitors who made the more sluggish start.
The Railway lads came out of the blocks flying and it was no surprise when, after ten minutes, they had opened the scoring. A good run on the right by the recalled Luke Evans made inroads into the away teams defence and, with good inter linking play with the once again insperational Liam Slinsby, a great cross from the right by Slinsby left Sam Baily with an easy tap in at the far post.
This led to the home side taking the game by the scruff of the neck, starting to play some great football, despite the difficult conditions. The midfield pair of Danny Foxon and Sam Coulson dominating the middle of the park, pulling the strings for 'The Railway' and also snuffing out any rare threats from the visitors.
In the 35th minute, the home team made their dominance pay and increased their lead to 2-0. Again the Railways midfield duo were heavily involved, releasing the ball to Liam Slinsby on the right wing. Slinsby then beat four Horncastle players before placing a superb, inch perfect shot into the far corner of the net, leaving the visiting keeper with no chance.
Just before half time Moorlands Railway had the opportunity to make it 3-0. Horncastle were on a break down the left when a great challenge from Darren Symonds and then Sam Bailey lead to the ball falling to Danny Foxon. His excellent pass released leading scorer Kieron O'Boyle who evaded a desperate challenge by a Horncastle defender, but on this occassion was denied by a great save, leaving the scoreline 2-0 to 'The Railway' at half time.
Horncastle were struggling to make any impression on the game and when they did find their way into Moorlands half it was either the midfield duo of Foxon and Coulson or the centre back pairing of Phil Evans and Craig Tomlinson who snuffed out the danger.
In the second half both teams started brightly, both aware that the next goal could prove vital. but, as in the first half, it was 'The Railway' lads who started the better.
In the 53rd minute the home side got the all important third goal, and this time it was top scorer O'Boyle who got his name on the scoresheet, netting his 10th goal of the season. Picking the ball up from a deep goal kick, he proceded to beat Horncastle's centre half, before, this time, beating the keeper with a great finish.
At this point the game looked over, Moorlands lead seeming unassailable for the away team, who had failed to provide much of threat to Moorlands Railway's goal all day.
However in the 70th minute, Horncastle gave themselves a lifeline. After an innocuous attack down the left hand side that came to nothing, the ball ended up in the arms of home keeper Richard Kemp, disaster struck. Rolling the ball out in anticipation of another deep kick forward Kemp was closed down by a Horncastle forward, forcing him to pick the ball up. As he bent down to collect the ball Kemp was caught in the face by his opponents knee. This lead to the keeper feeling dazed and eventually the referee blowing up and awarding a free kick, 12 yards out, for Kemp holding onto the ball for too long.
This strange decision lead to Horncastle reducing the arrears, after a short pass from the resultant free kick, with all 'The Railway' players set up on the goal line deffending their net, the ball was placed into the corner of the goal.
This gave the visitors some belief, and for the first time in the game some real pressure was put upon the Moorlands goal and in the 83rd minute Horncastle got their second goal of the game. A neat run on the right hand flank lead to the right winger beating two players before firing his shot in at the near post.
This lead to a tense final few minutes for the home side but Horncastle were unable to find a third goal to take the match into extra time and 'The Railway' were rewarded, for their early dominance, with a victory.
All in all an excellent result from the home side along with a much improved overall performance, leading to a home fixture against South Clifton (of division one) in the next round on Sunday 14th December.

LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY 2 ST HELENS 1
Sunday 16th November

On a cold morning at Newark Road, Moorlands took on St Helens in a re-run of the league game between the two that was played three weeks ago when both teams left with a point following a closely fought 1-1 draw.
Moorlands Railway were looking to strengthen their grip at the top of the league after a weekend off following last weeks postponement due to a waterlogged pitch.
St Helens started the game kicking from right to left, but within five minutes it was 'The railway' lads who opened the scoring. A throw on the right hand side resulted in Liam Slingsby putting in a fantastic cross, this lead to a goal mouth scramble, The lively James Hulse being the player to react quickest in the box turning smartly to slot the ball past the diving keeper.
'The Railway' continued to force the play, St Helens being camped in their own half, but they couldn't find the breaktrough to increase their lead, it didn't help that the St Helens goalkeeper was pulling of some excellent saves ensuring the scoreline stayed at just 1-0 as the referee blew his whistle for half time.
After the re-start St Helens looked to force their way back into the game, but now it was Moorlands turn to show their defensive abilities, and the back four, lead by their captain Paul Hodds, continue to deny them any space or time to threaten the home teams goal.
In the 58th minute a great run and shot from Sean Frecklington beat 'The Saints' keeper but crashed against the top of the bar and sailed over as once again Moorlands began to exert pressure on St Helens goal. Unfortunately, despite the pressure, due to some poor finishing and more good goalkeeping 'The railway' could not increase their lead.
This proved to be costly as, in the 70th minute, Moorlands gave away possesion in their own half and St Helens managed their first shot on target, Richard Kemp being beating in the home goal to make the score 1-1. This seemed to galvanise St Helens and they enjoyed their best spell of possesion for the whole ninety minutes, with Moorlands struggling to cope with the pressure.
However with seven minutes remaining of the game the decision that sealed the outcome of the game was made by the home management team. Making their final substitution of the day 'The Railway' sent on Glen Merryweather and it was he it followed home Danny Foxon's effort from 20 yards. The St Helens keeper could only parry the effort and Mayweather was on hand too fire home the rebound and earn Lincoln Moorlands Railway all 3 points. This continued mayweathers good form as he scored his second goal in two games.
In the end 'The Railway' got their just rewards for a good all round team performance but they will have to learn to be more clinicall in front of goal this season as they continue their pursuit of honours.
